The product

LaMetric began in 2013 with one idea: a clock that shows more than the time. LaMetric TIME became a connected smart display that people buy, set up in minutes on home Wi-Fi and keep for years. It launched on Kickstarter in 2014, won a Red Dot Design Award in 2016 and went into volume production with Foxconn. Today it runs in a fleet scaling toward 100,000 devices in 20+ countries, with 250 OTA releases shipped. One in-house team did all of it: industrial design, electronics, firmware, companion apps, cloud, production and fleet operations.

The challenges

Turn one idea, a clock that shows more than the time, into a connected product people buy, set up in minutes and keep for years, then keep every device secure and up to date wherever it is.

A product people buy

Industrial design, cost and quality that work in a consumer market.

Set up in minutes

Simple onboarding through a companion app on home Wi-Fi.

Up to date for years

Secure updates and new features for every device in the field.

An app store for the device

Build an app store and developer platform so new apps keep extending what the device can do, long after it ships.

Embedded Linux on tight hardware

A full embedded Linux system, apps and OTA updates running on just 256 MB of RAM and 256 MB of flash.

Lower cost in volume production

5 iterations of BOM optimisation on a product already in volume production.

Our approach

Designed: one in-house team for industrial design, electronics, firmware, companion apps and cloud. LaMetric TIME launched on Kickstarter in 2014 and raised $370K. Its design won a Red Dot Design Award in 2016.

Manufactured: taken into volume production with Foxconn, with our own factory test, flashing and provisioning tools.

Operated: a fleet scaling toward 100,000 devices in 20+ countries, updated over the air and monitored every day.

Extended: LaMetric SKY, a modular smart light, and LaMetric Solar Glance, digital signage for the energy industry, built on the same platform.

What it means for you: the same team, test framework, on-device agent and OTA tooling go into every client product.
