Frequently asked questions
What does Smart Atoms do?
We design, build, manufacture and operate connected products for OEMs and ISVs: architecture, electronics and firmware, embedded Linux, CI/CD, manufacturing, OTA updates and fleet operations, cost reduction and rescue of stalled projects. One engineering organisation covers the whole lifecycle, from concept to devices running in the field.
Who do you work with?
Original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) building connected devices, and independent software vendors (ISVs) that need reliable hardware, embedded software and fleet tooling for their software to run on. Our core industries are energy, industrial automation, robotics and smart infrastructure.
What makes Smart Atoms different from a typical design house?
We build and run our own products. Since 2013 we have designed, manufactured and operated LaMetric connected devices, sold in 20+ countries, with our own fleet scaling toward 100,000 devices. The engineering decisions we recommend are ones we have made, shipped and supported ourselves.
How can we work with you?
Four engagement models: end-to-end product development; a defined project such as a BSP, OTA system or production test station; team extension with senior engineers working inside your team; and a fractional system architect for architecture leadership. We also take over and recover stalled or failing products.
Can you build the whole product, hardware included?
Yes. Product development covers concept and prototyping, electronics and PCB design, MCU firmware, embedded Linux, enclosure and mechanical design, certification support, production and fleet operations, delivered by one in-house engineering organisation.
Do you work with our existing team, vendors or contract manufacturer?
Yes. We regularly work alongside in-house teams, EMS partners and other suppliers, and can take over work from a previous vendor.
Who owns the intellectual property?
You own the bespoke deliverables we create for you once they are paid for. We keep ownership of our pre-existing tools and building blocks and grant you the licence you need to use them in your product. Terms are set out in the agreement and statement of work.
Do you sign an NDA?
Yes. We are happy to sign a mutual NDA before you share product details.
Will you compete with our product?
No. Our own products are LaMetric smart displays, and we launch products only in the smart display niche. We sign an NDA before you share details, you own what we build for you, and your project and its details are used only for your product.
How do you handle security?
We design in secure boot, unique device identity from the factory, signed over-the-air updates and secure connectivity, with the EU Cyber Resilience Act requirements in mind.
Where are your teams?
Sales in London, R&D and delivery in Lviv, and manufacturing and sourcing in Shenzhen.
Can you help with manufacturing?
Yes. We have volume production experience with Foxconn. We support small-batch and volume production, sourcing, DFM and DFT reviews, production test stations, flashing and secure provisioning in China, through our own proven supply chain and our Shenzhen office, or with your contract manufacturer in any other location.
How large a fleet can you support?
Our OTA, monitoring and fleet practices come from running our own fleet, which is scaling toward 100,000 devices. We design update and monitoring systems to grow with your fleet.
How do you price projects?
Defined scopes are usually fixed price; ongoing and evolving work is time and materials. After a short technical discovery we send a proposal with scope, timeline and cost.
How do we get started?
Tell us about your product through the contact page or at info@smartatoms.com. A senior engineer will get back to you to arrange a call and a short technical discovery.
